Short Bio for Prof. Alavi
Maryam Alavi is the
Chairperson and a professor in the information systems department in the College of
Business and Management at the University of Maryland. Alavi's areas of expertise and
research are technology-mediated learning process, decision and group support systems and
application of information technology in business and managerial process design. Dr. Alavi
has authored forty published papers and her work has appeared regularly in several
scholarly and practitioner information systems journals. Dr. Alavi is Associate Editor of
several information systems journals including Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly
(1987-1990), Journal of Strategic Information Systems, Journal of Management Information
Systems, and Information and Management. Dr. Alavi is a frequent speaker at the national
and international conferences. She has served as the Program Chairperson of the
International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS, 1990) and the ICIS Doctoral
Consortium Chairperson (1995). She is the elected Vice President of Education of the
Association of Information Systems (AIS). Dr. Alavi has served as a consultant to several
private and public organizations including: MCI Telecommunications, Marriot Corporation,
the World Bank, the Aspen Institute, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S.
General Accounting Office. Dr. Alavi is the recipient of the Allan Krowe Teaching Award
from the College of Business and Management and the Distinguished- Scholar Teacher Award
from the University of Maryland.
Dr. Alavi holds a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems and a M.S. in Computer and
Information Systems from the Ohio State University, and a B.A. in Computer Science and
